I was called to surrender my choice of friends, my choice of dreams, and at times my dignity, many years ago when I answered the call to become a Christian.  I let go of streetwise hooligans who said they were my friends.  I stopped doing the things I wanted to do simply because I had a passion for them.  I was scorned and humiliated by haters.  I soon discovered loving friends, some of whom are still with me decades later.  I soon realized the dreams I gave up were not as good for me as the dreams God gave me to replace them.  I soon discovered that the approval of shallow people is not as valuable as the peace in my heart that only God can give.

Mandy Hale, the author of the quote I selected for this Easter 2013, is a Christian.  What she is writing about is a relationship with a man, not a relationship with God.  Men are not God, that they should ask of you this kind of sacrifice.  Question their authority.  Respect yourself.  Anyone romancing you is a traveling companion on your road of life, not a deity.  Don’t let them act like one or take God’s place in your life.  I think that’s what Mandy is saying.
